WHVL is Digital Television!

As you may know, broadcast television switched to all digital on June 12th, 2009 – the date set by Congress for all full-power television stations to broadcast exclusively in a digital format.

But the law does not require 'LP' designated television stations like WHVL to switch to digital. As a result, WHVL will continue broadcasting in analog on TV channel 29.

Even though WHVL is not mandated by congress to broadcast in a digital format, WHVL had made the commitment to our viewers to have a brand new, High Definition digital channel on-the-air well ahead of the DTV transition deadline for full-power broadcasters. WHVL is presently broadcasting a digital HD signal on-the-air at 29.1 and America One at 29.2. You should rescan your DTV converter box or ATSC TV to experience the full WHVL digital signal. WHVL is also supplying several cable systems with an HD signal, but many are not providing customers with this service enhancement. Please contact them to tell them you wish to receive myTV WHVL in HD today.

How does this affect you?

Antenna users wishing to continue receiving both the current WHVL analog signal, and experience WHVL HD Programming and America One will need to choose a TV or DTV Converter box carefully.

Data suggests many viewers will not be affected, however, those that watch ‘over the air’ analog low-power stations must purchase specific equipment to have easy access to both analog and digital television signals. Additionaly, televisions you might not have purchased converter boxes for should still receive our analog signal, provided they are in 'Air' reception mode.

Viewers who plan to watch ‘over the air’ TV, will need an "analog pass-through" converter box, or an NTSC/ATSC television that passes through an analog signal and a digital signal. Virtually all “analog pass-through“ converter boxes qualify for the government’s  DTV coupon program.

Without an “analog pass-through” converter box, viewers will need a small device called a "splitter" and some new wiring – not unlike setting up your TV with a DVD player and VCR.

Analog pass-through boxes are available at most major electronic retail outlets.
